Why we stopped making families wait until week three to participate
Jordan Hale, D.O., Medical Director
For years we did what most residential programs do: keep families at a distance for the first few weeks so the person in treatment could settle in. It made the early days quieter for staff. It did not make them better for patients.
What we saw, over and over, was that the first family conversation set the tone for everything after it. When it happened in week three, it was a negotiation. When it happened in the first 72 hours, it was a plan.
So we moved it. Every family now has a first call within three days, and a weekly session after that. Discharges are steadier, and the calls we get six months later are different: fewer emergencies, more updates.
